Faludi Ferenc: Wheel of Fortune (Forgandó szerencse in English)

Portre of Faludi Ferenc

Forgandó szerencse (Hungarian)

Fortuna szekerén okosan ülj,
Úgy forgasd tengelyét, hogy ki ne dülj:
            Ha szépen vezetett;
            Ha miben kedvezett,
            Meg ne örülj:
Fortuna szekerén okosan ülj!

Jó kedve s kereke egyaránt jár:
Forgandó, változó: ma kinccsel vár,
            Holnap lenyomorít,
            És megint boldogít;
            Elhiggyed bár:
Jókedve s kereke egyaránt jár.

Érdemre nem tekint, szemtelen, vak,
Kire ma vont aranyt, holnap szűrt rak.
            Tudják, kik táborát
            Lakták és udvarát,
            Sok nagy urak:
Érdemre nem tekint, szemtelen, vak.

Hol édes jó anyád, hol mostohád;
Dolgáról senkinek számot nem ád:
            Megbecsül, megaláz,
            Magasztal, legyaláz,
            Bút hoz reád:
Hol édes jó anyád, hol mostohád.

Wheel of Fortune (English)

Our Lady Fortuna gives none a safe ride,
Hold on to the wheel if you don't want to slide:
But should you excel,
Or Miss Luck treat you well
Yet abide -
Our Lady Fortuna gives none a safe ride.

Her wheel and her favours both move at one pace;
Revolving and changeful, now loaded with grace,
Now spiteful, and then
All smiles again.
Know your place:
Her wheel and her favours both move at one pace;

Your merit means nothing to one who is blind,
Whom one day she frees, the next she will bind.
Great men for her sport
In tent or at court
Are confined.
Their merit means nothing to one who is blind.

Once mother of charity, now stepdame brought low,
She'll not be held debtor for what she must owe:
Who honours and shames,
Consoles first then blames
And brings woe,
ce mother of charity, now stepdame brought low!
