Csoóri Sándor: A Globe-Trotting Shudder (Világot járó hideglelés in English)
|
Álom a tengerekről. Vendégként lépkedtek itt a Sarkifény irgalmában. Lúdbőrösek a fák, a rakpart kövei s a tengerre néző szobrokon is áthullámzik valami világot járó hideglelés.

A Globe-Trotting Shudder (English)This summer night is bright. The nocturnal waters are bright. One can clearly see a distant shiver pulling into the harbor as if people's teeth were chattering on the other side of the earth. Helsinki sleeps flat on its back, stupefied with fatigue, as someone who was struck by violent heat. Only the feeble drunks cock their ears. They sense this shiver, wanting to stuff warm seagulls under their shirts. Who knows what tomorrow has in store? Maybe a new day with blooming roses that sprout up. Ship debris lurks at the water's edge - or is the blatantly proud collapse coming like a barbaric heart attack but without prophets, public speakers? Everything is close, even what was remote as if there had been no distance, no time as if we had not been waiting, sometimes for centuries for one word to claim the incognito future as ours. Even a deep sigh was enough, the name of a new God. Dreams of an ocean because life wanted to go on and not only in grime, in the moment's stifling ecstasy. Is it enough to live? No, one must outlive even life! Once the Finns strolled as guests at the mercy of the arctic light. The trees grow goose pimples now from the cold. The rocks freeze. Even the statues, facing the ocean, feel a kind of globe-trotting shudder. I bend down and stroke the water like someone who can't help but love.
