Beney Zsuzsa: The sea (A tenger in English)

Portre of Beney Zsuzsa

A tenger (Hungarian)

Hány meg hány évig éltél az időben.
Már kiléphetsz. Az emberek közül
elköltözhetsz egy lakatlan szigetre.
Ezentúl nem házakat látsz, csak a tengert

a határtalan horizontra nyílót.
Sűllyedő, felbukkanó tükröket
a sós szélben. Vagy egyetlen lapos
ezüsttálcát melyről nem tudhatod

hogy az ég tükörképe, vagy talán
maga a vízre leszállott magasság.
A fönt és a lent tengerészcsomói
hurkaiban veszejted életed.

The sea (English)

How many years have you lived in time.
Now you can quit. You can move away from
men's company to a deserted island.
Hence it will not be houses that you see,

but sea, opening to an endless horizon.
Mirrors sinking and rising
in salty wind. Or a single
flat silver tray about which you cannot know

whether it is the likeness of the sky,
or maybe height itself which landed on the water.
In up and down loops of sailors' knots,
you perish, drown your life.
