Ady Endre: Magyar fa sorsa

Portre of Ady Endre

Magyar fa sorsa (Hungarian)

Lelkemben a magyar fa

Lombjai esnek, hullnak:

Lombosan, virágosan,

Így kell, hogy elpusztuljak.

Hejh-hajh, Szilvániából,

Erdők helyéről jöttem:

Lomboztam ima helyett

S keveset könyörögtem.

Ontottam a virágot,

Virultam jóban-rosszban:

Mások gyümölcsösödtek,

Én mindig virágoztam.

Öreg vagyok s pogányul

Imát még most se mondok:

Hulljatok csak halálig

Magyar virágok s lombok.

The fate of the hungarian tree (English)

In my soul the branches fall,

Drop from the Hungarian tree;

So it is that I must die,

Blossoming and in full leaf.

Transylvania I left,

Land of forests, all carefree;

Put out branches 'stead of prayers,

Worshipped insufficiently.

Cultivating here my flowers

I've been constantly in bloom,

Blossoming through good and ill;

Others bear and ripen fruit.

Older now and pagan still

Not a single prayer from me;

You will fall till your tree dies,

Branches and flowers of Hungary.
