Ady Endre: A kürtösök szava

Portre of Ady Endre

A kürtösök szava (Hungarian)

Fáradt akarók hada ez,

Ez Xerxes gyáva népe:

Hajh, kürtösök, rohanjatok

Nagy kürt-szóval elébe.

Bomlottan, álmosan tolul

Szomorú ember-nyája:

S mi lesz, hogyha a kürtösök

Szava útját nem állja?

Magyar föld, te juh-legelő,

Öngyilkosa erődnek,

Mi lesz, hogyha kürtöseid

Elfáradva kidőlnek?

Mi lesz, ha elszéled a nyáj,

Ha már eleget tűrtünk?

Ha már mi is elfáradunk

S ha elnémul a kürtünk?

Hajh, kürtösök, rohanjatok

Nagy kürt-szóval elébe:

Boldogtalan, szomoru nyáj,

Ez a magyar föld népe.

Bomlottan, álmosan tolul

Szomorú ember-nyája:

S mi lesz, hogyha a kürtösök

Szava útját nem állja?

The sound of the horn (English)

This is a horde of tired yearners,

This is Xerxes' cowardly folk;

Come running then, you horn-blowers,

To the front and sound your note.

In disorder and dreamily

Throngs the doleful flock of men.

If the horns fail to give their sound,

Fail to lead the way, what then?

Land of Hungary, you sheep-run,

Self-destructive of your power,

What will happen if your horn-blowers

Are exhausted, blow no more?

What then, if the flock is scattered,

If we now enough have borne?

What if we too are exhausted

And if no more sounds our horn?

Come running then, you horn-blowers,

To the front and sound your note.

A hapless, doleful flock of sheep

Is the Magyar land's poor folk.

In disorder and dreamily

Throngs the doleful flock of men.

If the horns fail to give their sound,

Fail to lead the way, what then?
