1992 graduates in Hungarian–German Philology from Budapest University (ELTE)
1962-71 lecturer at a high school
1971 to present freelance writer and translator

His main prizes include:
The International PEN Club's Prize (1966); Graves Prize (1972); Milán Füst Award (1975), Attila József Prize (1978); Tibor Déry Award (1986); Book of the Year Award; The Soros Foundation’s Oeuvre Prize; Getz Prize (1993), the Laurel Wreath Prize of the Hungarian Republic (1996), Kossuth Prize (1998), The Soros Foundation's Oeuvre Prize (2002)
