Sládek, Josef Václav: At the gates of fortune (U bran štěstí in English)

Portre of Sládek, Josef Václav

U bran štěstí (Czech)

Tloukl jsem na štěstí brány,
jako jiní na ně tlukou; —
otevřelo, chopilo mne
tou svou vlídnou, teplou rukou.

Usmálo se. — Kolem stáli
lidé šťastní. — „Srdcem lehcí,“
dělo, „vešli za mé brány.
Chceš být šťasten?“
Děl jsem: „Nechci.“

At the gates of fortune (English)

At Fortuna’s gates I hammered,
as do all when sentimental; –
opening, it reached out, led me
in with hand kind, warm and gentle.

Fortune smiled. – I stood encircled
by the happy. – “Light-hearts may”,
quoth she, “through my portals enter.
You seek joy?“
I said: “No way”.
