Seifert, Jaroslav: Píseň o lásce

Portre of Seifert, Jaroslav

Píseň o lásce (Czech)

Slyším to, co jiní neslyší,
bosé nohy chodit po plyši.

Vzdechy pod pečetí v dopise,
chvění strun, když struny nechví se.

Prchávaje někdy od lidí,
vidím to, co jiní nevidí.

Lásku, která oblékla se v smích,
skrývajíc se v řasách na očích.

Když má ještě vločky v kadeři,
vidím kvésti růži na keři.

Zaslechl jsem lásku odcházet,
když se prvně rtů mých dotkl ret.

Kdo mé naději však zabrání
- ani strach, že přijde zklamání,

abych nekles pod tvá kolena.
Nejkrásnější bývá šílená.

Song of love (English)

I hear what others do not, fleet,
on felt, the patter of bare feet.

Sighs on the letter neath the seal,
the strings’ vibrating while quite still.

When from the crowd I shun I flee,
I see what others fail to see.

Love, which in laughter chose to dress,
hiding in eyelashes, no less.

While in its locks yet snowflakes loom,
I see a rosebush start to bloom.

I first heard love begin to leave,
when my own lips first lips did cleave.

Who shall my earnest hope undo
– not fear, that disappointment’s due,

to stop me falling at your knees.
The loveliest is sane the least
