Křesadlo, Jan: The Autumn Rondel (Rondel o podzimu in English)

Portre of Křesadlo, Jan

Rondel o podzimu (Czech)

Na břehu řeky stál jsem sám.
Ptáci se v olších houfovali.
Myslel jsem v duchu: Jak, a zdali,
letošní zimu překonám?

V mlze se břehy rýsovaly.
Upoután; dlouhý, černý prám
tváří v tvář hleděl křovinám.
Ptáci se v olších houfovali.

Zas jedno léto je to tam,
- a ani jsme se nenadáli -
zakrátko mrazík astry spálí
a hmyz dá sbohem zahradám.
Pach řízků bude stoupat z jam.
Ptáci se v olších houfovali.

The Autumn Rondel (English)

I see myself by the river now.
The birds in alder groves were massing.
My inner thoughts: Will I be passing
This year's winter at all, and how?

The banks outlined in foggy guessing.
Long since here tied, a punt's black bow
Eyeing the overhanging bough.
The birds in alder groves were massing.

Another summer's afterglow;
Scarcely we've met, the next we're chasing
Frostbitten asters burning, dressing
Gardens whose insects off will go.
Off-cuts aroma - then the snow.
The birds in alder groves were massing.
