Křesadlo, Jan: The Patron's Day Rondel (Rondel o patronově svátku in English)

Portre of Křesadlo, Jan

Rondel o patronově svátku (Czech)

Zhlceni starou hospodou,
nejlevnější jsme víno pili.
V polotmě, jako pod vodou.
Den venku svítil jasně bílý.

Byl svátek. Ten jsme nesvětili,
což bylo jistě se škodou.
Květ aster zářil pohodou
nejlevnější jsme víno pili.

Podzimně trpou lahodou.
Nás zvuky varhan nasytily,
Jež vítr zanášel co chvíli
z kostela, jako náhodou.
Smísené s lehkou svobodou
nejlevnější jsme víno pili.

The Patron's Day Rondel (English)

Swallowed up by an old pub, grim
We drank the cheapest wine there going
Submerged in half-light 'neath its rim.
Outside, day-white its dazzle throwing.

Our Patron's Day. No joy we're showing,
Which can't be good for me, or him.
Content with asters calm, cut trim,
We drank the cheapest wine there going.

The bitter taste of autumn hymn
Something to feed on, gusting, growing
Breeze-blown pipe-organ segments, flowing
From the church, as if by some whim.
Lightly euphoric freedom, slim -
We drank the cheapest wine there going
