Radnóti Miklós: Hymn About Peace (Himnusz a békéről in English)

Portre of Radnóti Miklós

Himnusz a békéről (Hungarian)

Te tünde fény! futó reménység vagy te,
forgó századoknak ritka éke:
zengő szavakkal s egyre lelkesebben
szóltam hozzád könnyüléptü béke!

Szólnék most ujra, merre vagy? hová
tüntél e télből, mely rólad papol
s acélt fen szívek ellen, - ellened!
A szőllőszemben alszik így a bor

ahogy te most mibennünk rejtezel.
Pattanj ki hát! egy régesrégi kép
kisért a dalló szájú boldogokról;
de jaj, tudunk-e énekelni még?

Ó, jöjj el már te szellős március!
most még kemény fagyokkal jő a reggel,
didergő erdők anyja téli nap:
leheld be zúzos fáidat meleggel,

s állj meg fölöttünk is, mert megfagyunk
e háboruk perzselte télben itt,
ahol az ellenállni gyönge lélek
tanulja már az öklök érveit.

Nyarakra gondolunk s hogy erdeink
majd lombosodnak s bennük járni jó,
és kertjeinknek sűrü illatában
fáján akad a hullni kész dió!

s arany napoknak alján pattanó
labdák körül gomolygó gombolyag,
gyereksereg visong; a réteken
zászlós sörényü, csillogó lovak

száguldanak a hulló nap felé!
s fejünk felett surrog és csivog
a fecskefészkektől sötét eresz!
Így lesz-e? Így! Mert egyszer béke lesz.

Ó, tarts ki addig lélek, védekezz!

Hymn About Peace (English)

You ethereal light! you intangible hope,
rare ornament of whirling centuries:
with ringing words, more and more excited
I have spoken to you, graceful-light peace!

Now I’d call you again, where are you? where
did you flee from this winter preaching of you
and honing steel against hearts, - against you!
Wine’s sleeping like it in a tiny grape

the way you conceal yourself in our souls.
Well, do burst out now! An ancient picture
of the blessed haunts me, their lips singing,
but oh, dear, are we here still able to sing?

Oh, come along dear March with your breezes!
now mornings still arrive with chill and frost,
mother of shivery forests, winter sun:
breathe on the cold, frosty trees your warmth,

and stop above us, too, for we’re freezing
in this winter parched by wars in battlefields,
where the soul so weak and unable to withstand
now learns to grasp the arguments of fists.

We think about summers and our forests soon
coming into leaves, where it’s so good to walk,
and in the thick fragrance of our gardens
the ripe nut’s still hanging a bit on its stalk!

and on the bottom of golden days around
bouncing balls there’s a real whirling skein,
a host of children squeal, and in the fields
the dazzling bright horses with fancy-mane

are galloping towards the setting sun!
and above our heads so dark are the eaves
with the swallow-nests hissing and prattling!
Will it be so? It will! For someday peace will be here!

Oh, soul, hold out till then, protect yourself!
