Parti Nagy Lajos: Summer, silent film (Nyár, némafilm in English)

Portre of Parti Nagy Lajos

Nyár, némafilm (Hungarian)

Ma bolyhos csönd a nyár, keringő vattazápor,
válik a nyár, fehér bohóc a cirkuszától,
a cintányér, a dob, a síp, a kasztanyét
cihát lobogtat érte, pár dunyha tollpihét,
meleg szél szórja szét prüszkölve és kacagva,
vedlik a nyár, az ágynak, asztalnak is vacak fa,
bár kormos és vörös szemed az éjszakától,
s nem látod tán e boldog, fehér erdőt a fától,
szeretnek, mind szeretnek, hajlong a kába rost,
majd fognak és kifőznek, irkába papirost.
Vedlik a nyár, szívem, lenyergelt vattapóni,
mi hát a fulladásod e sürgő vattahadhoz?
Az ugrabugra hóhoz egynyári némafilmen,
mind elmegyünk, na bumm, ma épp te mégy el innen
hol forrón és puhán kering a vattazápor,
s válik a nyár, fehér bohóc a cirkuszától.

Summer, silent film (English)

A quiet woolly summer day, a fluff-shower waltz,
the aspen’s parting – a cotton clown leaves the circus,
the cymbals and drums and whistles and castanets all
flutter pillows in farewell, a quilt, a few duckquills
scattered about by the warm wind, with coughs and sneezes
the aspen is shedding, the wood that merely teases,
and tho’ sooty-red from the night your eyes can’t see,
perhaps, these happily dancing white woods for the tree,
they love you, they all do, their dazed fibres bow at the hip,
they’ll grab you and stew you to copybook carbonate pith.
The aspen is shedding, my sweet, unsaddled fluff bronco,
ta-boom-tarara-boom, aren’t you going to continue?
slapping away like the wind, at pillows and quill dolls,
ta-boom-tarara-boom, why not practise at marbles?
small tobogganing mothers, small kids gasping for air,
what is your choking beside this cotton-wool splendour?
One day we must all go to the hopping skipping snow
on a summer silent film, ta boom, your turn to go
and take a ride on the hot and soft fluff-shower waltz;
the aspen’s parting – a cotton clown leaves the circus.
