Kukorelly Endre: A Garden of Medicinal Plants (Egy gyógynövény-kert in English)

Portre of Kukorelly Endre

Egy gyógynövény-kert (Hungarian)

Amikor a kert valahány aprócska
zugában villogva elöl, vagy
a mély árnyékban hátramaradt
minden szabad kis virágfejet
ingatni kezd a szél, és valamennyi
megbújó szálacskát és levelet,
a lebegőt, a lehullót s a földet is,
a köveket meg a kövön szétnyíló

vörös vagy sárga, bordó, mézszínű
gyümölcseit a kertnek, a kibújó,
kibukó, kemény, nedves, lassan csak
fakult barnára száradó magvakat, a
sehová araszoló, sehová futkározó
ijesztő égi-földi, vad és ijedt
berregő szerkezeteket, játékszoba-
lepedőnyi eltépett szárnyat, levált

lábacskát, finom, olajkék páncélok
roppanását, a csorgó, még áttetszőn
csillogó, halk-éles-fájdalmasan szakadó,
s az épphogy, csak épp az imént
széjjelnyomott puha testeket is:
ha egyetlen csak tejszín- és zölden
csillogó elvált hajszálnyi erecskét
ingatni kezd a szél, és ezt az igyekvő

és elszáradó, elkorhadt, széthullt, már
porlani kész mérhetetlen felszínt
valami lélek párája futja pedig be.
Ő felfele néz, a szélben a pára
kicsit fölszáll, hogy megint
lecsapódjon. Az egész kert
figyel, fölfelé. Csak fölfelé
figyelt. De lefelé tekintettek rá.

A Garden of Medicinal Plants (English)

When the flashing wind starts to sway every
little flower-head that’s been left free
in every tiny corners of the garden
in the front or those that were left behind in a deep shadow
together with all the hidden little stems and leaves,
those that float in the air and the ones falling to the ground
and the dirt, the stones, and the purple, yellow or
the honey-colored fruits of the garden,

which open up on the rocks, the hard,
wet seeds that fall or crawl out,
that seeds that first only dry into a faded brown,
the contraptions inching their way toward no place at all,
that are running toward no place in particular,
and which are scarry heavenly-terrestrial,
buzzing, frightened, the sheet-sized torn wings
of a children’s play room, a torn off

tiny foot, the cracking of oil-blue shells,
the soft bodies that were crushed
just a moment ago and are
still translucent, splitting
with a silently glistening sharp pain:
should the wind start
to way but a single vein shimmering in a green
and creamy hue, then this ambitious

surface well on its way to rotting, to drying out
and to disintegrate, this entire unmeasurable lot is then permeated with the halo of some spirit.
It looks upward as it soars upward a little in the wind
so that right away it can descend again.
The whole garden is listening intently, upwards.
Yes, it was only harkening upwards.
But it was from above that they were looking at it.
